Aluminum alloy D16 / EN AW 2024
Aluminum alloy D 16 (European classification – EN AW 2024) is aluminum with additions of copper and magnesium. In industry, such grades of metals are called duralumin. Magnesium-copper-aluminum alloys or duralumin are widely in demand as the main structural elements in the aircraft and aerospace industries.
They are extremely durable and light in weight. Metal alloys D16 are rarely used in their pure form (without thermal hardening), since they are less strong and hard than alloys of the Amg5 and Amg6 grades. At the same time, they are less resistant to corrosion processes and weld worse.
can compete with the strongest, lightest and most corrosion-resistant counterparts.
Features
Despite its high strength, the alloy is quite “difficult” for welding operations. In most situations, spot welding is used in an inert atmosphere, or parts are fastened in other ways (bolt fasteners, rivets, and others).
Machining parts from this alloy is not difficult: due to the high hardness, the material can easily be given the required shape on special machines and equipment.
