Metallographic polishing and grinding

Polishing and grinding of metals is necessary in order to give an attractive appearance to the details and a decorative sheen. Such operations allow you to remove defects and scratches and restore this or that object.

The surface of the sample is first processed with an abrasive belt or a rotating disk machine. These mechanisms are often equipped with chilled fluid attachments to allow for cold cutting while flushing abrasive particles from the belt or disc. Care must be taken to prevent overheating of the part during the rough grinding stage.

During the rough grinding operation, it is recommended to bevel the sharp edges of the sample or the sample holder to prevent tearing of the sanding papers and polishing cloths during subsequent operations. Excessive pressure during rough grinding will form deep scratches and increase the depth of the broken metal on the sample surface. This damaged layer can extend from ten to fifty times the depth of the scratch created by the abrasive grain. That is why after this stage it is the turn of metal polishing.

Of all the steps required for quality sample preparation, perhaps the most critical are those relating to the actual polishing of the sample.

Smoothing is best done with abrasives or diamond cement slurries. A cloth must be used to smooth the spinning disc. Diamond bonding is commonly used in combination with lubricating fluids to evenly distribute the diamond particles over the surface of the polishing cloth. During rough polishing, the sample is moved clockwise around the grinding wheel to ensure even removal of metal from the entire surface, but to avoid long polishing in one direction.

This is done mechanically and follows a similar procedure to anti-aliasing. It removes all minimal irregularities and brings the surface of objects to the ideal. Some materials, especially soft and ductile materials, require alumina polishing.
