Duplex rolled metal
Duplex steel is rapidly gaining popularity. The demand for products is so high that now almost every enterprise engaged in production has its own separate catalog. If you need duplex stainless steel, we recommend contacting A-Sintez.
How did the material appear on the market?
The first duplex alloys began to be produced in the 40s of the last century. But, despite this, raw materials were widely used and distributed around the world only ten years ago. The main reason for this is the improvement of production technology. Separately, it is worth noting that today manufacturers have the opportunity to more accurately regulate the nitrogen content in their products.
What are the benefits?
The idea to develop a catalog of duplex alloys is justified by the desire to obtain a high quality material. Thanks to the use of approximately the same amount of austenitic and ferritic steel, it provided the following advantages.
Increasing the strength index. Products withstand a load of 400-450 MPa, which is almost twice as much as that of a ferritic or austenitic alloy. As a result, the manufacturer has the opportunity to save on the volume of raw materials used to obtain a finished product that has identical characteristics than analogues. In addition, due to the reduction in thickness, the final weight is reduced. This is extremely important when it comes to the production of vessels and tanks, as well as building structures under constant pressure.
Even with increasing thickness, duplex alloy is convenient to use when performing welding work.
Increasing impact strength. The result is much better than that of the closest analogue – a ferritic alloy. In particular, this applies to situations where the operation of the finished product or structure is carried out at an ambient temperature below -50 degrees Celsius. Therefore, the duplex is suitable for use even at a temperature of -80 degrees.
Improved resistance to corrosion cracking. Austenitic materials are usually severely affected by this problem. The ability to resist corrosion is valued in the production of processing plants, swimming pool frames, brewing tanks, and other products that are constantly in contact with water.
Boilers made using duplex steel are equipment that combines reliability, practicality and quality of work for many years.
How is the material welded?
To quickly weld the material, it is necessary to follow a number of certain rules. For example, when preparing:
carefully clean the metal and the joint from traces of dirt;
make a slightly larger gap at the root and the angle of cutting edges;
pre-treat work surfaces only using metal wire that is resistant to corrosion;
make sure that there is no moisture on the surface of the welding electrode.
Welding experience shows that duplex steel also forces certain rules to be followed.
Check heat input. It should not be too low or high. Conventional duplex welding has a range of 0.5 to 2.5 kJ/mm. Also, the interpass temperature should not exceed 200 degrees Celsius.
Make sure that there is no scale on the back of the seam. Therefore, it is extremely important to choose a gas that can protect the root of the weld. Typically, a mixture of hydrogen/nitrogen with high purity argon is used for protective purposes.
It is important to make the right choice of a specialist who can competently weld the elements. This is due to the high probability of cracking, as well as the appearance of corrosion.
When carrying out welding work, do not make a wide transverse oscillation of the electrode. In accordance with the rules, one should not allow too much heat input, otherwise the metal will not weld properly.
Super duplex and hyper duplex alloy
When nickel is added to chromium ferritic steel, the manufacturer obtains a base with a mixed structure. In other words, ferrite and austenite will be present in the composition. The prefixes “hyper” and “super” in the name indicate an increased content of alloying elements. Consequently, even greater corrosion resistance is achieved compared to other types of materials.
The presented products are actively used in food production, medicine, construction and the chemical industry.
Where to buy duplex steel?
